Discover Tropiquaria

Set just a short distance from the Somerset coast and the edge of Exmoor National Park, Tropiquaria is a unique and welcoming attraction where guests can discover animals from around the world in a relaxed and friendly setting.

Home to a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles and fish, we offer the chance to get closer to wildlife while learning about the fascinating diversity of life on our planet. From playful meerkats and curious lemurs to colourful fish and impressive reptiles, there is always something new to discover!

The Old Radio Station

Originally commissioned in the late 1920’s, and completed in 1933, the main building was one of three radio transmitting stations built by the BBC at the time.

This historic building once played an important role in broadcasting radio across the region and is now a Grade II listed building, making Tropiquaria one of the few zoos in the UK housed within such a distinctive historic landmark.

Today the building forms the heart of the zoo and is home to wonders from all across the globe. The original Transmitter Hall now houses the Reptile House, the service basement houses the Aquarium, and the battery rooms are now home to the Nocturnal House. The original garage is now home to the Gift Shop, the audio rooms now house the offices, and the original staff canteen, where station engineers would have had their lunch with a view across the Quantocks nearly 100 years ago, now function as veterinary and quarantine facilities.

Our Mission

Over the years, we’ve grown into a diverse collection of wildlife. Today, our main focus is on our conservation work and educating guests on the wonders, and perils, of the modern world of wildlife.

Our main speciality in conservation is based in our Aquarium, where we now have one of the largest breeding collections in the world of small Mexican fish named Goodeids. Learn more about Goodeid Conservation.

We also work closely with animal rescue services across the UK to provide forever homes for animals in need – from cockatoos, bobcats, lemurs and reptiles, we’re proud to have helped rescue and rehabilitate countless animals from all walks of life.
