CONSERVATION Tropiquaria is very much a modern zoo with the emphasis on education and conservation. This year, they have incubated eggs from rare species of bird successfully, and in the future, hope to house many other rare and endangered species. They are particularly proud with their breeding success with Jamaican boas, Madagascan tree boas, and the northern helmeted curassow, a rare South American bird. The helmeted curassows probably are a lineage of Late Miocene origin. This species' present-day distribution suggests that it became isolated some 6 m.y.a. as its mountain range uplifted. Tropiquaria has also had considerable recent success breeding pancake tortoises; a flat-shelled tortoise most commonly found in Tanzania and Kenya. |
